Easy hair bun using recycled stockings

I’d been noticing beautiful perfect buns in women’s hair recently and wondered what their secret was.  I didn’t realise it was so easy!  I’ve seen hair donuts in shops but made one myself for free using an old stocking that had a hole in it.

Reusing old stockings

You cut the stocking legs off the body as high up as you can (just under the crotch) and also cut the feet off so you have one long tube.  You start to roll the tube outwards through the middle whilst maintaining the donut shape.  I used both legs of stocking for the one donut as one leg made the donut too small.  You can use socks as well but depending on the sock thickness this will affect the thickness of your donut.

Tie your hair up into a high pony

Place the donut at the base of the ponytail

Put your head forward and spread the hair out like a fountain

Place a hair tie around the base of the ponytail

Start winding the miscellaneous hair around the base of the ponytail (clockwise or anti-clockwise doesn’t matter), pinning with bobby pins as you go

Voila!

Another action shot

My hair’s quite long so the excess wraps about the base of the ponytail quite a few times, pushing the bun off my head a bit more than I would like…. but I still think it looks great.  Once you get the hang of it, it won’t take you more than a minute!
