Lucas Papaw vs Suvana Paw Paw vs Nature’s Care Paw Paw vs Phytocare’s Papaya

I’ve had pretty poor memory recently.  On Sunday I ran out of rice, went out to buy some and came home to find a bag already sitting in the cupboard.

Last night I lost my Suvana Certified Organic Paw Paw and Honey balm so first thing this morning I visited Priceline and bought a small tube of Nature’s Care All Natural Paw Paw Lip Balm.  I put my wallet back into my handbag as I walked out of Priceline and found my Suvana paw paw :S  Super super annoying!!!!

But now I have tried 4 different types of paw paw (well actually 5 but Simmons Paw Paw salve has been discontinued so there’s no point including it) and can review them all for you.  So you all benefit from my forgetfulness! 🙂

The first paw paw I used ever was Lucas’ Papaw Ointment in that iconic red tube:

Lucas’ Papaw Ointment

I was happy enough with the product, especially since I had never tried anything else.  When I found out the main ingredient was petroleum jelly I was mortified.  I hate Vaseline and that is mainly petroleum jelly.  And given the amount of Lucas’ papaw ointment I inadvertently ingest I decided to go looking for another product.

I was in Chemist Warehouse and saw this tube of Phytocare’s Papaya Ointment with Calendula which is petrochemical free so grabbed a tube:

I found this product really watery – when I squeezed the tube, the liquid almost dribbled out so it didn’t stay on the fingertips long enough to apply on my lips.  I also found that during winter the tube would harden and it was impossible to squeeze product out.  I donated this to one of my sisters almost immediately.

I decided to do some research instead of grab another random tube and decided on Suvana:

Suvana Organic Paw Paw and Honey Balm

Although it did take some getting used to at first (initially I found it a bit dry and not moisturising enough especially since Lucas’ Papaw is petroleum-based and therefore greasy/moisturising).  However now, I love the stuff.  It does need re-application more often than Lucas’ Papaw but it feels better on my lips.  It also has the mildest mildest smell of honey which I adore.  It contains only natural ingredients, 98.1% of which are also organic!

Against the advice of my best friend who tried Nature’s Care Paw Paw, I bought a tube this morning as I was desperate (had tried a health-food store which didn’t have Suvana, and the only other option was Lucas’).

Nature’s Care Paw Paw Lip Balm

It has a sickly sweet smell which seems unnatural to me, and it does seem a little on the watery side.  It also feels more petroleum-y than the Suvana one and I find it sits on top of my lips and doesn’t really absorb.  It’s probably a case of getting used to it but a few hours after I purchased it, I found my good old trusty Suvanna in my handbag so will switch back to that.

Found it in the bottom of my handbag!

Suvana is only available at select health food stores.  I purchased from the health food store in Westfield Sydney.  I couldn’t find it in the health food store at World Square.  It’s far more exxy than the others but for me it’s worth the money (AUD$12.95 I think it was vs $4.95-$5.99 for Lucas’ Papaw and the small 10g Nature’s Care was $3.29)
